He was the son of a Czech father and an Austrian mother. Zawinul's father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a singer. His parents encouraged him to pursue music from a young age, and he began playing the accordion at the age of six. Zawinul's musical education began at the Vienna Conservatory, where he studied classical piano and composition. However, he was more interested in jazz and began playing in local clubs and bars. In 1957, he joined the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, but he left after a year to pursue a career in jazz. In 1959, Zawinul moved to the United States and settled in New York City. He quickly became a sought-after session musician and played with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Dinah Washington, Maynard Ferguson, and Cannonball Adderley. Zawinul joined Adderley's band in 1961 and became an integral part of the group's sound. He wrote some of their biggest hits, including "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "Walk Tall." In 1970, Zawinul formed the jazz fusion band Weather Report with saxophonist Wayne Shorter. The band's unique sound blended jazz, rock, and world music, and they became one of the most influential groups of the 1970s. Zawinul's keyboard playing was a key part of the band's sound, and he also contributed many of their most memorable compositions, including "Birdland," "Black Market," and "A Remark You Made." Zawinul continued to record and perform with Weather Report throughout the 1980s, but he also pursued a solo career. He released several albums under his own name, including "Dialects" and "My People," which showcased his interest in world music and his ability to blend different musical styles. In addition to his work as a musician, Zawinul was also a prolific composer. He wrote music for films, television, and the stage, including the score for the 1971 film "The Last Run" and the Broadway musical "The Color Purple." Zawinul's influence on jazz and popular music cannot be overstated. His innovative use of synthesizers and other electronic instruments helped to shape the sound of jazz fusion and influenced countless musicians in a variety of genres. He was also a pioneer in the use of world music influences in jazz, and his work helped to popularize the use of non-Western musical traditions in popular music. Sadly, Zawinul passed away on September 11, 2007, at the age of 75. However, his legacy lives on through his music and the countless musicians he inspired. He was a true innovator and a master of his craft, and his contributions to the world of music will be remembered for generations to come.More....
