Born on December 5, 1947, in Carmo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Gismonti grew up in a musical family. His father was a guitarist, and his mother was a pianist. Gismonti started playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the guitar and flute. Gismonti's musical education began at the age of 12 when he enrolled at the National School of Music in Rio de Janeiro. He studied classical music and composition under the guidance of renowned Brazilian composer and conductor, H. J. Koellreutter. Gismonti's early works were heavily influenced by the European classical music tradition, but he soon began to incorporate Brazilian folk music and jazz into his compositions. In 1969, Gismonti released his debut album, "Orfeo Novo," which featured his original compositions for guitar and flute. The album received critical acclaim and established Gismonti as a rising star in the Brazilian music scene. He went on to release several more albums in the 1970s, including "Água e Vinho," "Circense," and "Saudações." Gismonti's music is characterized by its eclectic blend of styles and influences. He draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including Brazilian folk music, jazz, classical music, and avant-garde music. His compositions often feature complex rhythms, intricate harmonies, and unconventional instrumentation. One of Gismonti's most famous works is his 1977 album, "Sol do Meio Dia," which features his compositions for guitar, piano, and orchestra. The album was recorded with the Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica de São Paulo and features Gismonti's signature blend of Brazilian folk music and classical music. The album's title track, "Sol do Meio Dia," is a hauntingly beautiful piece that showcases Gismonti's virtuosic guitar playing and his ability to create evocative melodies. In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Gismonti has also worked as an arranger and producer. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Brazilian singer Elis Regina, jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek, and classical guitarist John Williams. He has also been awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Brazilian government and the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. Today, Gismonti continues to compose and perform music. His most recent album, "Dança dos Escravos," was released in 2019 and features his compositions for guitar and piano.
