Born on 9th May 1957 in Birmingham, England, Lancelot showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later developed an interest in the organ and began taking lessons at the age of ten. Lancelot's talent for music was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a skilled organist. He attended King Edward's School in Birmingham, where he was a chorister and organ scholar. He later went on to study music at St John's College, Cambridge, where he was also an organ scholar. After completing his studies, Lancelot began his career as a professional musician. He held several positions as an organist, including at St Paul's Cathedral in London and Durham Cathedral. He also served as the Master of the Choristers and Organist at Durham Cathedral from 1985 to 2017. Throughout his career, Lancelot has performed at numerous prestigious venues around the world. He has given recitals at the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, and the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, among others.
