Amos attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied conducting with Gunther Schuller and composition with William Thomas McKinley. He also studied at the Tanglewood Music Center, where he worked with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. In 1990, Amos was appointed the music director of the City of London Sinfonia, a position he held for ten years. During his time with the orchestra, Amos led the ensemble in a wide range of repertoire, from Baroque and Classical works to contemporary music and film scores. He also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Joshua Bell, Nigel Kennedy, and Sarah Chang. Amos's work with the City of London Sinfonia earned him widespread recognition and numerous awards. In 1993, he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Conductor, and in 1995, he received the Classical Brit Award for Best Orchestral Album for his recording of the music of John Tavener. He also received the Diapason d'Or award for his recording of the music of George Gershwin. In addition to his work with orchestras, Amos has also been active as an opera conductor. He has conducted productions at the Royal Opera House in London, the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and the Santa Fe Opera, among others. He has also worked with many leading singers, including Plácido Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Bryn Terfel. Amos's commitment to contemporary music has been a hallmark of his career.
