Arnold Rosner was an American composer of classical music who was born on November 8, 1945, in New York City. He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and his parents encouraged his musical interests from a young age. Rosner began playing the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the violin and viola as well. Rosner attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he studied composition with Vittorio Giannini. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he studied with Leo Smit and Allen Sapp. He later earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Buffalo, where he studied with Lejaren Hiller. Rosner's early compositions were influenced by the music of Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, and Richard Wagner. He was also interested in the music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and he incorporated elements of these styles into his own compositions. Rosner's first major work was his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1965 while he was still a student at the University of Buffalo. The symphony was well-received and helped to establish Rosner as a promising young composer. In the years that followed, Rosner continued to compose symphonies, as well as chamber music, choral works, and operas. His music was often characterized by its use of complex harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and a sense of grandeur and drama. One of Rosner's most notable works is his Symphony No. 5, which he composed in 1988. The symphony is a tribute to the victims of the Holocaust, and it incorporates Jewish melodies and themes into its musical language. The work has been praised for its emotional power and its ability to convey the tragedy and horror of the Holocaust through music. Another notable work by Rosner is his opera The Chronicle of Nine, which he composed in 1990. The opera is based on the life of the medieval philosopher Moses Maimonides, and it explores themes of faith, reason, and the struggle for knowledge. The opera has been praised for its lyrical beauty and its ability to convey complex philosophical ideas through music. Throughout his career, Rosner received numerous awards and honors for his compositions. He was a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award. He was also a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). Rosner continued to compose music until his death on November 8, 2013, at the age of 68. His legacy as a composer of classical music continues to be celebrated by musicians and music lovers around the world.
