He was the son of Italian immigrants and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged their son's musical talents from a young age. Bernardi began playing the piano at the age of four and gave his first public performance at the age of six. He studied piano with Alberto Guerrero, a renowned Canadian pianist, and later studied conducting with Pierre Monteux in the United States. In 1957, Bernardi made his debut as a conductor with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile conductor, and he went on to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Bernardi's most notable achievements was his tenure as the music director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Canada. He held this position from 1969 to 1982 and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the finest in the country. During his time with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Bernardi conducted many world premieres and commissioned new works from Canadian composers. Bernardi was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded over 100 albums throughout his career. He recorded with many of the world's leading orchestras and soloists, and his recordings received critical acclaim and numerous awards. In addition to his work as a conductor, Bernardi was also a respected pianist. He often performed as a soloist with orchestras and was known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart and Beethoven. Throughout his career, Bernardi received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1975 and was promoted to Companion in 1994. He also received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award in 2001 and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2002. Bernardi continued to perform and conduct well into his 70s, and he remained an active and influential figure in the classical music world until his death on June 2, 2013, at the age of 82. His legacy as a conductor, pianist, and champion of Canadian music continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.More....
