Sinfonia Australis is a classical music ensemble based in Sydney, Australia. The ensemble was founded in 1995 by conductor and artistic director, Antony Walker, with the aim of promoting and performing classical music in Australia and around the world. The ensemble's main members include some of Australia's most talented classical musicians, including violinist Kirsten Williams, cellist Julian Smiles, and pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska. The ensemble also collaborates with a range of guest artists, including international soloists and conductors. Sinfonia Australis has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salzburg Festival in Austria. The ensemble has also toured extensively throughout Australia, Europe, and Asia, and has recorded several critically acclaimed albums. One of the highlights of Sinfonia Australis' career was their performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games opening ceremony. The ensemble performed a specially commissioned piece by Australian composer Richard Mills, which was broadcast to an estimated audience of 3.7 billion people worldwide. Sinfonia Australis has also been recognized for their outstanding contributions to classical music in Australia. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious APRA Award for Excellence in Classical Music, and in 2015, they were awarded the Helpmann Award for Best Chamber and/or Instrumental Ensemble Concert. In addition to their performances, Sinfonia Australis is also committed to promoting classical music education in Australia. The ensemble regularly conducts workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and has collaborated with a range of educational institutions, including the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Australian Youth Orchestra.
