Richard Farrelly was an American composer and songwriter, best known for his composition "The Isle of Innisfree." He was born on February 5, 1881, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Irish immigrant parents. His father was a musician and played the fiddle, which inspired Farrelly to pursue a career in music. Farrelly began his musical education at a young age, studying the piano and violin. He later attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied composition and orchestration. After completing his studies, he worked as a music teacher and conductor in various schools and churches in Massachusetts. In 1910, Farrelly composed "The Isle of Innisfree," which would become his most famous work. The song was inspired by a poem by William Butler Yeats and was first performed by the Irish tenor John McCormack. The song became an instant hit and has since been recorded by numerous artists, including Bing Crosby, Barbra Streisand, and Van Morrison. Farrelly continued to compose music throughout his career, writing songs for musicals and operettas. He also wrote several instrumental pieces, including "The Old Refrain" and "The Kerry Dance." His music was known for its Irish influences and romantic melodies. In addition to his work as a composer, Farrelly was also a respected music educator. He taught at the New England Conservatory of Music and was the director of music at Boston College. He was also a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). Farrelly passed away on September 29, 1958, in Boston, Massachusetts. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and recorded to this day. "The Isle of Innisfree" remains a beloved classic and a testament to Farrelly's talent as a composer.
