Franz Welser-Möst is a renowned Austrian conductor who has made a significant impact on the classical music world. Born on August 16, 1960, in Linz, Austria, Welser-Möst grew up in a musical family. His father was a choirmaster, and his mother was a music teacher. As a child, he learned to play the piano and violin and showed a keen interest in conducting. Welser-Möst began his formal music education at the age of eight when he joined the Vienna Boys' Choir. He later studied at the Vienna Music Academy, where he received training in conducting, piano, and violin. He also attended masterclasses with renowned conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and Claudio Abbado. In 1985, Welser-Möst made his conducting debut with the Vienna Volksoper, and in 1986, he became the music director of the London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Welser-Möst's career took off in the early 2000s when he was appointed the music director of the Cleveland Orchestra. He held this position from 2002 to 2018 and was the longest-serving music director in the orchestra's history.
