Born on March 2, 1961, in Sydney, Australia, Young grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a jazz musician, and her mother was a singer. Young began playing the piano at the age of six and later studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Young's passion for music led her to pursue a career in conducting. She studied conducting at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and later at the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria. In 1985, she won the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Young Conductor of the Year Award, which launched her career. Young's talent and dedication to music quickly earned her recognition in the classical music world. In 1987, she became the first woman to conduct the Vienna State Opera, where she led performances of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni." She also conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, becoming the first woman to do so. Young's success in Vienna led to invitations to conduct other major orchestras around the world. She has conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, among others. She has also served as the principal conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway and the Hamburg State Opera in Germany. One of Young's most significant achievements was her appointment as the first female principal conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2005. During her tenure, she led the orchestra in performances of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler, among others. She also commissioned new works by Australian composers and collaborated with artists from other disciplines, such as dance and theater. Young's contributions to classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2004, she was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia for her services to music. She has also received the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French government and the Brahms Prize from the Brahms Society of Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to her work as a conductor, Young is also a passionate advocate for music education.
