Artist Info
Role:ConductorBirth:December 17, 1940Genre:ChamberConcertoStephen Kovacevich is a renowned classical pianist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born on October 17, 1940, in San Pedro, California, Kovacevich grew up in a family of musicians. His mother was a pianist, and his father was a violinist. Kovacevich started playing the piano at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Kovacevich's family moved to England when he was ten years old, and he continued his musical education there. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later at the Juilliard School in New York. Kovacevich's talent was recognized early on, and he won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1961. Kovacevich's career as a concert pianist took off in the 1960s, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. He performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Sir Colin Davis, Sir Simon Rattle, and Sir Neville Marriner. One of the highlights of Kovacevich's career was his performance of Beethoven's complete piano sonatas at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1975. The performance was a critical and commercial success and cemented Kovacevich's reputation as a leading interpreter of Beethoven's music. He went on to record the complete cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas for EMI, which is considered one of the definitive recordings of the works. Kovacevich's repertoire is not limited to Beethoven, however. He has also performed and recorded works by Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, and many other composers. His recordings of Schubert's piano works are particularly acclaimed, and he has been praised for his ability to bring out the emotional depth and complexity of Schubert's music. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Kovacevich has also been active as a teacher. He has taught at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada and the Royal Academy of Music in London, among other institutions. Many of his students have gone on to have successful careers as pianists in their own right. Kovacevich has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2007, he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Gold Medal, which is one of the highest honors in classical music. He was also made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2014 for his services to music. Despite his many achievements, Kovacevich remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He has said that he sees himself as a servant of the music, rather than a performer seeking fame or recognition. His commitment to the music and his ability to bring out its emotional depth and complexity have made him one of the most respected and admired pianists of his generation.More....
