It was founded in 1948 by conductor Louis Auriacombe, who served as its music director until 1968. Since then, the orchestra has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Michel Plasson, who served as music director from 1968 to 2003, and Tugan Sokhiev, who has been music director since 2008. The orchestra is made up of around 120 musicians, and performs a wide range of repertoire, from Baroque and Classical music to contemporary works. It is known for its high level of technical skill and its ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music it performs. Over the years, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. It has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including pianists Martha Argerich and Lang Lang, and violinist Maxim Vengerov. One of the orchestra's most notable achievements was its performance of the complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies in 2008, under the direction of Tugan Sokhiev. The cycle was performed over the course of several weeks, and was widely praised for its depth and emotional intensity. The Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2002, it was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Debussy's La Mer and Nocturnes, conducted by Michel Plasson.
