Conchita Supervia was a Spanish mezzo-soprano who was born on December 8, 1895, in Barcelona, Spain. She was born into a family of musicians, and her father was a well-known conductor and composer. From a young age, Supervia showed a natural talent for singing, and she began her vocal training at the age of eight. Supervia made her professional debut at the age of 17, and she quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young singers of her generation. She was known for her powerful voice, her expressive phrasing, and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. Throughout her career, Supervia performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. She was particularly renowned for her performances of the works of Mozart, Rossini, and Bizet, and she was widely regarded as one of the greatest interpreters of Carmen. Supervia's career was marked by a number of notable achievements and awards. In 1929, she became the first Spanish singer to perform at the Metropolitan Opera, and she was also the first Spanish singer to perform at the Royal Opera House in London. She was awarded the Légion d'honneur by the French government in 1931, and she was made a member of the Order of Alfonso X the Wise by the Spanish government in 1932. She died at the age of 40 from complications related to childbirth, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of all time.
