José Serrano was a Spanish composer who was born on October 14, 1873, in the town of Sueca, Valencia. He was the son of a musician, and his father was his first music teacher. Serrano showed an early interest in music and began composing at a young age. He studied at the Valencia Conservatory, where he received a solid musical education. Serrano's early works were influenced by the zarzuela, a Spanish form of musical theater that combines music, dance, and drama. He wrote his first zarzuela, "La Canción del Olvido," in 1916, which became a huge success and established him as a leading composer of the genre. The zarzuela was based on a play by José María Pemán and tells the story of a young woman who falls in love with a soldier during the Spanish Civil War. Serrano's success continued with his next zarzuela, "La Dolorosa," which premiered in 1919. The work was based on a play by José María Alcaraz and tells the story of a woman who is forced to choose between her love for a man and her duty to her family. The zarzuela was a huge success and was performed all over Spain and Latin America. In 1920, Serrano was commissioned to write the music for the Spanish pavilion at the International Exhibition in Brussels. He composed a suite of Spanish dances, which became one of his most popular works. The suite includes "El Vito," "Zapateado," and "Fandango," among others. Serrano continued to compose zarzuelas throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including "La Reina Mora," "La Canción del Olvido," and "La Alegría del Batallón." His works were known for their catchy melodies, lively rhythms, and colorful orchestration. Serrano was also a skilled orchestrator and arranger, and he often arranged traditional Spanish folk songs for orchestra. In 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out, and Serrano's career was interrupted. He was forced to flee Spain and went into exile in Argentina. While in Argentina, he continued to compose and wrote several zarzuelas, including "La Corte de Faraón" and "La Canción del Olvido." He also wrote music for films and collaborated with the Argentine composer Juan José Castro. Serrano returned to Spain in 1947 and continued to compose until his death in 1941. His later works included the zarzuelas "La Dama del Alba" and "La Venta de los Gatos," as well as several orchestral works, including the "Suite Castellana" and the "Suite Andaluza." José Serrano was a prolific composer who wrote over 200 works, including zarzuelas, operettas, ballets, and orchestral works.
