Cortis received his formal music education at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Buenos Aires, where he studied under the tutelage of some of the most prominent music teachers of the time. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented singer and was soon performing in local opera productions. In 1913, Cortis made his professional debut in the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. The performance was a huge success, and Cortis was praised for his powerful voice and emotional depth. This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career for Cortis. Over the next few years, Cortis continued to perform in opera productions throughout Argentina and South America. In 1917, he was invited to perform in Europe, and he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy. This performance was a turning point in Cortis's career, as he was now recognized as one of the most talented tenors of his generation. Cortis went on to perform in some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera.
