Born on October 8, 1966, in Lahr, Germany, Zimmermann began playing the viola at the age of three. Her father, who was a music teacher, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Zimmermann's early years were spent studying music at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, where she received her diploma in 1982. She then went on to study at the Musikhochschule Hannover, where she received her concert diploma in 1984. During her studies, Zimmermann won several awards, including the Jugend musiziert competition in 1980 and the International Viola Competition in Budapest in 1984. After completing her studies, Zimmermann began her professional career as a soloist and chamber musician.
