Proebstl's musical education began at the Munich Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned violinist Georg Kulenkampff. He later continued his studies at the Salzburg Mozarteum, where he studied with the legendary violinist and conductor, Yehudi Menuhin. Proebstl's talent as a violinist was quickly recognized, and he began performing in concerts at a young age. In 1944, at the age of 18, he made his debut as a soloist with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. This performance was a huge success, and it marked the beginning of Proebstl's career as a soloist. Over the years, Proebstl performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
