One of the highlights of the Münchner Bach-Orchester's history was its performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1965. This performance, which featured soloists such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Peter Schreier, was recorded and released on LP, and is still considered one of the definitive recordings of the work. The Münchner Bach-Orchester has also been recognized for its excellence with a number of awards and honors. In 1971, the orchestra was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Bach's Mass in B Minor. The ensemble has also been awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition to its performances of Bach's works, the Münchner Bach-Orchester has also performed works by other Baroque composers such as Handel and Vivaldi. The ensemble has also premiered works by contemporary composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki and Hans Werner Henze. Today, the Münchner Bach-Orchester continues to perform under the direction of its current music director, Hansjörg Albrecht.
