Endymion Ensemble is a renowned classical music group based in London, England. The ensemble was founded in 1979 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. Over the years, the group has grown in size and reputation, becoming one of the most respected and sought-after ensembles in the world of classical music. The founding members of Endymion Ensemble were clarinetist John Anderson, cellist David Smith, and pianist Michael Dussek. They were soon joined by violinist Krysia Osostowicz and violist Garfield Jackson, and together they began performing chamber music concerts in and around London. In the early years, Endymion Ensemble focused on performing works by contemporary composers, including Peter Maxwell Davies, Harrison Birtwistle, and Oliver Knussen. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming and virtuosic performances, and were soon invited to perform at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe. One of the highlights of Endymion Ensemble's early career was their performance at the 1982 Aldeburgh Festival, where they premiered a new work by Peter Maxwell Davies. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish the group as one of the leading ensembles in contemporary classical music. In the years that followed, Endymion Ensemble continued to expand their repertoire, performing works by classical and romantic composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. They also began collaborating with other musicians and ensembles, including the Nash Ensemble and the London Sinfonietta. One of the most notable collaborations in Endymion Ensemble's history was their partnership with composer and conductor Oliver Knussen. Knussen worked closely with the group, conducting many of their performances and writing several works specifically for them. This collaboration resulted in some of Endymion Ensemble's most acclaimed performances, including their 1993 performance of Knussen's "Songs for Sue" at the BBC Proms. Over the years, Endymion Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In 1995, they were awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Ensemble Award, and in 2003 they received the prestigious Gramophone Award for their recording of works by Oliver Knussen. In addition to their performances and recordings, Endymion Ensemble has also been active in promoting and supporting young musicians. They have worked with many young composers and performers, providing them with opportunities to showcase their talents and develop their skills. Today, Endymion Ensemble continues to be one of the most respected and influential ensembles in the world of classical music. They have performed at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe and the United States, and have collaborated with some of the most renowned composers and musicians of our time. Despite their success and acclaim, Endymion Ensemble remains committed to their original mission of promoting and performing contemporary classical music. They continue to commission and premiere new works by emerging composers, and to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of chamber music.
