The New London Chamber Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based in London, England. The group was founded in 1989 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the repertoire for wind instruments. The founding members of the ensemble were flutist Linda Merrick, oboist Melanie Ragge, clarinetist Ian Mitchell, bassoonist Rebecca Gilliver, and horn player Richard Bissill. Since its founding, the New London Chamber Ensemble has become one of the leading chamber music ensembles in the United Kingdom. The group has performed extensively throughout the UK and Europe, as well as in Asia and the United States. The ensemble has also recorded several albums, including works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. The New London Chamber Ensemble is known for its innovative programming, which often includes lesser-known works alongside more familiar pieces. The group has also commissioned and premiered several new works by contemporary composers, including Judith Weir, Michael Berkeley, and John Woolrich. One of the highlights of the New London Chamber Ensemble's career was its performance at the Wigmore Hall in London in 1992. The group performed a program of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms to critical acclaim. The ensemble has also performed at other prestigious venues, including the Royal Festival Hall, the Purcell Room, and the Barbican Centre. In addition to its concert performances, the New London Chamber Ensemble is also committed to music education. The group regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and has worked with several music schools and conservatories throughout the UK. The New London Chamber Ensemble has received several awards and accolades throughout its career. In 1994, the group was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Ensemble Award. The ensemble has also been nominated for several Gramophone Awards for its recordings. The current members of the New London Chamber Ensemble are flutist Daniel Pailthorpe, oboist Melanie Ragge, clarinetist Ian Mitchell, bassoonist Rebecca Gilliver, and horn player Richard Bayliss. The group continues to perform and record, and remains one of the most respected and innovative chamber music ensembles in the UK.
