He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional cellist and his mother a pianist. Waterhouse began playing the cello at the age of six and showed a natural talent for the instrument. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1984. After completing his studies, Waterhouse began his career as a professional cellist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles throughout Europe. However, he soon realized that his true passion was for composition, and he began to focus more on writing music. In 1990, he moved to Germany to study composition with the renowned composer Hans Werner Henze at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. Waterhouse's early compositions were heavily influenced by the music of his teacher, Henze, as well as by the works of other contemporary composers such as György Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki. His music was characterized by its complex harmonies, intricate rhythms, and use of extended techniques on the cello. One of Waterhouse's early works, "Cello Concerto No. 1," was premiered in 1993 by the cellist Alexander Baillie and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. The piece was well-received by critics and established Waterhouse as a promising young composer. In the years that followed, Waterhouse continued to write music for the cello, as well as for other instruments and ensembles. His compositions began to incorporate more tonal elements, and he developed a distinctive style that blended elements of contemporary classical music with traditional forms and structures. One of Waterhouse's most notable works is his "Symphony No. 2," which was commissioned by the BBC and premiered in 2002 by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. The piece is a large-scale work that showcases Waterhouse's skill at orchestration and his ability to create complex, multi-layered textures. Waterhouse has also written a number of chamber music works, including several pieces for cello and piano. His "Cello Sonata No. 1" and "Cello Sonata No. 2" are both highly regarded works that have been performed by cellists around the world. In addition to his work as a composer, Waterhouse is also an accomplished cellist and has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe. He has recorded several albums of his own compositions, as well as works by other composers. Waterhouse currently resides in Berlin, Germany, where he continues to compose and perform. His music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, and he is widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary classical composers of his generation.More....
