Il Fondamento is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1989 by Paul Dombrecht, a Belgian oboist and conductor. The ensemble is known for its performances of Baroque and early Classical music, and has gained a reputation for its historically informed approach to music-making. Dombrecht, who had previously played with the Collegium Aureum and the Ricercar Consort, founded Il Fondamento with the aim of exploring the rich repertoire of Baroque music. He assembled a group of musicians who shared his passion for historically informed performance, and the ensemble quickly gained a following for its lively and engaging performances. The core members of Il Fondamento include Paul Dombrecht on oboe, Ryo Terakado on violin, and Wieland Kuijken on cello. Over the years, the ensemble has also collaborated with a number of guest musicians, including harpsichordist Andreas Staier and soprano Sophie Karthäuser. Il Fondamento has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and the Salzburg Festival. The ensemble has also recorded extensively, with over 30 albums to its name. One of Il Fondamento's most notable performances was its 1999 concert at the Utrecht Early Music Festival, where the ensemble performed Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. The concert was hailed as a triumph, with critics praising the ensemble's "sparkling" and "energetic" performance. Il Fondamento has also been recognized with a number of awards and honors. In 1996, the ensemble won the prestigious Echo Klassik award for its recording of Handel's Water Music. The ensemble has also been nominated for several other awards, including the Gramophone Award and the International Classical Music Award. Despite its success, Il Fondamento has remained committed to its mission of exploring the rich repertoire of Baroque and early Classical music. The ensemble continues to perform and record, and its members remain dedicated to their craft and to the pursuit of historically informed performance.
