He was born on May 1, 1927, in Briceni, Romania, to a Jewish family. His father was a cantor, and his mother was a pianist. Bertini showed an early interest in music and began studying the violin at the age of six. He later switched to the piano and began composing his own music. In 1944, Bertini and his family moved to Palestine, where he continued his musical education. He studied composition with Paul Ben-Haim and conducting with Laszlo Halasz. In 1953, he founded the Israel Chamber Orchestra, which he conducted for several years. He also served as the music director of the Israel National Opera from 1968 to 1971. Bertini's career as a conductor took off in the 1960s when he began conducting major orchestras around the world. He made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1964 and went on to conduct the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and many others. He was known for his precise and expressive conducting style, which brought out the best in the orchestras he worked with. One of Bertini's most significant achievements was his work with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra. He recorded many acclaimed albums with the orchestra, including works by Mahler, Bruckner, and Shostakovich. Bertini was also a prolific composer, with over 100 works to his name. His compositions were often inspired by Jewish themes and included operas, symphonies, and chamber music. He was awarded the Israel Prize for Music in 1991 in recognition of his contributions to Israeli music. Throughout his career, Bertini received numerous awards and honors for his work as a conductor and composer. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1989 and the Legion of Honor by the French government in 1991.
