Born in 1961 in Scotland, Bowyer showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later switched to the organ and quickly established himself as a prodigious talent. Bowyer's musical education began at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he studied under the tutelage of Professor George McPhee. He later went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was awarded the prestigious Walford Davies Prize for organ performance. Bowyer's career as a professional musician began in the early 1980s when he was appointed as the organist and choirmaster at St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled performer and was soon in demand as a soloist and accompanist. One of the highlights of Bowyer's early career was his performance of Olivier Messiaen's "La Nativité du Seigneur" at the Edinburgh Festival in 1984. The performance was widely acclaimed and helped to establish Bowyer as one of the leading organists of his generation. Over the years, Bowyer has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, and the Lincoln Center in New York. He has also collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and Sir Simon Rattle. In addition to his work as a performer, Bowyer is also a respected teacher and has held teaching positions at several leading music institutions, including the Royal College of Music and the University of Glasgow. He has also served as a judge for several international music competitions, including the St. Albans International Organ Festival and the Dublin International Organ Competition. Bowyer's discography is extensive and includes over 70 recordings, many of which have received critical acclaim. His recording of Messiaen's "Complete Organ Works" was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or in 1995, and his recording of the organ works of Max Reger was named "Record of the Year" by BBC Music Magazine in 2001. In recognition of his contributions to the world of music, Bowyer has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1990, he was awarded the Medal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and in 2003 he was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Glasgow and the University of Aberdeen. Despite his many achievements, Bowyer remains dedicated to his craft and continues to perform and record at the highest level. His passion for music and his commitment to excellence have made him one of the most respected and admired classical music artists of his generation.More....
