Sebastian Lang-Lessing is a renowned conductor and pianist who has made a significant impact on the classical music world. Born in Germany in 1968, Lang-Lessing showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, where he received his diploma in piano performance. After completing his studies, Lang-Lessing began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts throughout Europe and the United States. However, he soon discovered his passion for conducting and began studying with renowned conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. In 1998, Lang-Lessing was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Orchestre de Paris, where he worked closely with conductor Christoph Eschenbach. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative conductor, and in 2001 he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in Australia. During his time with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Lang-Lessing led the orchestra in a number of critically acclaimed performances, including a highly praised performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2. He also collaborated with a number of renowned soloists, including pianist Stephen Hough and violinist Joshua Bell. In 2006, Lang-Lessing was appointed as the music director of the San Antonio Symphony in Texas. During his tenure with the orchestra, he has led the orchestra in a number of highly successful performances, including a critically acclaimed performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. He has also worked to expand the orchestra's repertoire, introducing audiences to lesser-known works by composers such as Shostakovich and Prokofiev. In addition to his work with the San Antonio Symphony, Lang-Lessing has also conducted a number of other orchestras around the world, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as a guest conductor at a number of prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the BBC Proms. Throughout his career, Lang-Lessing has received numerous awards and accolades for his work as a conductor and pianist. In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Sir Charles Mackerras Prize for his work with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He has also been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to the arts. Despite his many accomplishments, Lang-Lessing remains committed to his craft and continues to push the boundaries of classical music. He is known for his innovative programming and his ability to bring new life to even the most familiar works.
