Les Sacqueboutiers is a French classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of early music. The ensemble was founded in 1976 by Jean-Pierre Canihac, who was a professor of trumpet at the Toulouse Conservatory at the time. Canihac was inspired to form the ensemble after discovering a collection of Renaissance music in the library of the Toulouse Conservatory. The name "Les Sacqueboutiers" comes from the French word "sacqueboute," which means "sackbut," a type of early trombone. The ensemble's name reflects its focus on the performance of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, which often featured brass instruments like the sackbut. The founding members of Les Sacqueboutiers were all students of Canihac at the Toulouse Conservatory. They included Jean-Pierre Canihac (trumpet), Daniel Lassalle (sackbut), Bernard Fourtet (sackbut), and Michel Laplenie (sackbut). Over the years, the ensemble has had many different members, but the core group has remained relatively stable.
