Kossenko grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a conductor. He started playing the flute at the age of six and quickly showed exceptional talent. Kossenko studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he won first prize in flute performance. He also studied musicology at the Sorbonne University in Paris, where he earned a PhD in 2006. His doctoral thesis was on the music of Jean-Philippe Rameau, a French composer of the Baroque era. Kossenko has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic.
