Hans-Martin Linde is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music as a flutist, conductor, and musicologist. Born on December 24, 1930, in Werne, Germany, Linde grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a church musician, and his mother was a singer. Linde started playing the recorder at the age of six and later switched to the flute. Linde studied music at the Musikhochschule in Cologne, where he was a student of Aurele Nicolet. He also studied with Jean-Pierre Rampal in Paris and Severino Gazzelloni in Rome. In 1953, Linde won the first prize at the International Music Competition in Geneva, which marked the beginning of his successful career as a flutist. Linde's career as a flutist took him to many parts of the world, where he performed with some of the most renowned orchestras and conductors. He was a member of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra from 1955 to 1960 and the Munich Chamber Orchestra from 1960 to 1966. He also played with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. In addition to his career as a flutist, Linde was also a conductor. He founded the Linde Consort in 1965, which specialized in performing Baroque music on period instruments. He also conducted many other orchestras, including the English Chamber Orchestra, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. Linde was also a musicologist and a professor of musicology at the University of Zurich from 1973 to 1996. He wrote several books on music, including "The Recorder Player's Handbook" and "The Flute Book." He also edited many editions of Baroque music, including the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach. One of the highlights of Linde's career was his performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra in 1972. The performance was recorded and released on the Philips label, and it became one of the best-selling classical recordings of all time. Linde's interpretation of the concertos was praised for its clarity, precision, and musicality. Linde received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1974, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1981, he received the Bach Medal from the city of Leipzig. In 1990, he was awarded the Prix mondial du disque from the Académie Charles Cros in Paris. Linde retired from performing in 1996 but continued to teach and write about music. He died on March 9, 2019, at the age of 88. His contributions to the world of music as a flutist, conductor, and musicologist will be remembered for generations to come.
