Born on December 5, 1957, in Burgos, Spain, Pérez showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study conducting at the Madrid Royal Conservatory of Music, where he graduated with honors. Pérez began his career as a conductor in 1980, when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was soon appointed as the principal conductor of the orchestra. Pérez held this position for over a decade, during which time he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. In 1993, Pérez was appointed as the principal conductor of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 2005. Pérez has also served as the principal conductor of the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the Valencia Symphony Orchestra, and the Teatro Real in Madrid. He has conducted numerous orchestras around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. One of Pérez's most notable performances was his interpretation of Mahler's Symphony No. 9 with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2002.
