Born on August 8, 1946, in Segovia, Spain, Pons grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a tenor, and his mother was a pianist. Pons showed an early interest in music and began singing in the choir of his local church at the age of six. Pons received his formal music education at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of renowned baritone Carlos Munguía. He made his professional debut in 1973 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, where he performed the role of Figaro in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville." This performance marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career for Pons. Throughout his career, Pons has performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. He has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of our time, including James Levine, Riccardo Muti, and Zubin Mehta. One of Pons' most notable performances was his portrayal of the title character in Verdi's "Rigoletto" at the Metropolitan Opera in 1989.
