The Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia (Galician Symphony Orchestra) is a classical music ensemble based in A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. Founded in 1992, the orchestra has become one of the most important cultural institutions in the region, with a reputation for excellence in both classical and contemporary music. The idea for the orchestra was first proposed in the late 1980s by a group of musicians and music lovers in Galicia who felt that the region needed a professional symphony orchestra to showcase its rich musical heritage. After several years of planning and fundraising, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia was officially established in 1992, with the support of the Galician government and the city of A Coruña. The orchestra's founding conductor was Victor Pablo Pérez, a renowned Spanish conductor who had previously led the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife and the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada. Pérez's vision for the orchestra was to create a world-class ensemble that would be recognized for its technical precision, artistic excellence, and commitment to promoting Galician culture. Under Pérez's leadership, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia quickly established itself as one of the leading orchestras in Spain, with a repertoire that ranged from classical masterpieces to contemporary works by Spanish and Galician composers. The orchestra's first concert, held in November 1992, featured works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Galician composer Xanro López. Over the years, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists, including Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Martha Argerich, and Yo-Yo Ma. The orchestra has also performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the 1999 World Expo in Hannover, Germany, where it played to a crowd of over 50,000 people. The concert, which featured works by Spanish and Galician composers, was broadcast live on German television and received widespread critical acclaim. In addition to its performances, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia has also been recognized for its recordings, which have won numerous awards and accolades. The orchestra's recording of Manuel de Falla's "El Amor Brujo" with mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza won a Latin Grammy Award in 2002, and its recording of Joaquín Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" with guitarist Pepe Romero was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2004. In 2013, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia celebrated its 20th anniversary with a series of concerts and events throughout Galicia. The orchestra also announced that it had renewed its contract with conductor Dima Slobodeniouk, who had taken over as principal conductor in 2013. Today, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia continues to be one of the most important cultural institutions in Galicia, with a mission to promote classical music and Galician culture both at home and abroad. The orchestra's current principal conductor is Paul Daniel, a British conductor who has previously led the English National Opera and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. With Daniel at the helm, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia looks set to continue its tradition of excellence and innovation in the years to come.
