Exsultate, jubilate, K. 165 (158a) is a sacred motet composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1773. It was written for the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini, who was a member of the Salzburg court chapel. The piece is scored for solo soprano, strings, and organ continuo. The motet is divided into four movements. The first movement, "Exsultate, jubilate," is a joyful and exuberant aria in which the soprano sings of the joy and exultation that comes from praising God. The second movement, "Fulget amica dies," is a lyrical and expressive aria in which the soprano sings of the beauty of the day and the happiness that comes from being in the presence of God. The third movement, "Tu virginum corona," is a gentle and reverent aria in which the soprano sings of the Virgin Mary and her role as the queen of virgins. The final movement, "Alleluia," is a jubilant and celebratory aria in which the soprano sings of the glory of God and the joy that comes from praising him. The piece is characterized by its virtuosic vocal writing, with the soprano required to perform a number of challenging runs and leaps. The string accompaniment is also highly virtuosic, with rapid passagework and intricate counterpoint. The organ continuo provides a solid foundation for the vocal and instrumental parts, adding depth and richness to the overall sound. Exsultate, jubilate, K. 165 (158a) premiered in Salzburg in January 1773, with Rauzzini performing the solo part. The piece was an immediate success, and has since become one of Mozart's most popular sacred works. Its joyful and exuberant character, combined with its virtuosic vocal and instrumental writing, make it a favorite among performers and audiences alike.
