Orphée et Eurydice is an opera composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck in 1762. The French version of the opera premiered in Paris in 1774. The opera is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The plot revolves around Orpheus, a musician who travels to the underworld to rescue his wife Eurydice, who has died. He is granted permission to take her back to the world of the living, but on the condition that he does not look back at her until they have left the underworld. However, Orpheus cannot resist the temptation and looks back, causing Eurydice to be lost forever. The opera is divided into three movements. The first movement is set in the world of the living, where Orpheus mourns the loss of his wife. He is visited by the god Amour, who tells him that he can travel to the underworld to rescue Eurydice. The second movement takes place in the underworld, where Orpheus sings to the spirits of the dead and convinces them to let him see Eurydice. He is granted permission to take her back to the world of the living, but on the condition that he does not look back at her until they have left the underworld. The third movement takes place as Orpheus and Eurydice are leaving the underworld. Orpheus cannot resist the temptation and looks back, causing Eurydice to be lost forever. The opera is known for its simplicity and clarity of expression. Gluck sought to reform opera by removing the excesses of the Baroque era and focusing on the drama and emotions of the characters. The music is characterized by its simplicity and directness, with a focus on melody and harmony. The opera also features a chorus, which plays an important role in the drama. Overall, Orphée et Eurydice is a powerful and emotional opera that explores the themes of love, loss, and temptation. Gluck's innovative approach to opera paved the way for the development of the Classical era, and his influence can be seen in the works of Mozart and Beethoven.
