Role:EnsembleGenre:OrchestralSymphonyThe Albany Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Albany, New York. Founded in 1930 by Edgar Curtis, the orchestra has grown to become one of the most respected and innovative orchestras in the United States. The early years of the Albany Symphony Orchestra were marked by a commitment to bringing classical music to the people of upstate New York. Under the leadership of Curtis, the orchestra performed in schools, churches, and community centers throughout the region, building a loyal following of music lovers. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Albany Symphony Orchestra began to attract national attention for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. Under the leadership of conductor Julius Hegyi, the orchestra premiered works by some of the most important composers of the time, including Aaron Copland, Elliott Carter, and John Cage. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Albany Symphony Orchestra continued to push the boundaries of classical music, under the leadership of conductor David Alan Miller. Miller, who has been the orchestra's music director since 1992, has been instrumental in building the orchestra's reputation as a champion of new music. One of the highlights of the Albany Symphony Orchestra's history came in 2014, when the orchestra won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for its recording of John Corigliano's "Conjurer." The recording, which features violinist Michael Daugherty, was praised for its virtuosity and emotional depth. In addition to its commitment to contemporary music, the Albany Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its performances of classical repertoire. The orchestra has performed with some of the world's most renowned soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. Throughout its history, the Albany Symphony Orchestra has remained committed to its mission of bringing classical music to the people of upstate New York. The orchestra performs more than 20 concerts each year, including a popular series of free outdoor concerts in the summer. Today, the Albany Symphony Orchestra is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and exciting orchestras in the United States. With its commitment to new music and its dedication to serving its community, the orchestra is sure to continue to inspire and delight audiences for many years to come.More....
