He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor and composer. Lopatnikoff began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. He later studied at the Kiev Conservatory, where he was a student of Reinhold Glière. In 1923, Lopatnikoff moved to Paris to continue his studies at the École Normale de Musique. Lopatnikoff also studied with Paul Dukas and Arthur Honegger, two prominent composers of the time. In 1927, Lopatnikoff moved to the United States, where he settled in New York City. In 1930, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Lopatnikoff's music is characterized by its rhythmic vitality and harmonic complexity.
