Genre:OrchestralThe Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) is a classical music ensemble based in Rochester, New York. Founded in 1922, the RPO has become one of the most respected and renowned orchestras in the United States. The RPO was founded by George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak Company and a prominent philanthropist. Eastman had a passion for music and wanted to create a world-class orchestra in his hometown of Rochester. He provided the initial funding for the orchestra and served as its first president. The RPO's first conductor was Albert Coates, a British conductor who had previously conducted the London Symphony Orchestra. Coates led the RPO for two seasons before returning to Europe. He was succeeded by Eugene Goossens, an Australian conductor who had previously conducted the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Goossens led the RPO for eight seasons and helped establish the orchestra's reputation for excellence. Over the years, the RPO has had many notable conductors, including David Zinman, who led the orchestra from 1974 to 1985 and helped establish its reputation as a leading American orchestra. Other notable conductors include Christopher Seaman, who led the orchestra from 1998 to 2011, and Ward Stare, who has been the orchestra's music director since 2014. The RPO has also had many notable musicians over the years. One of the most famous was the violinist Joseph Silverstein, who served as the orchestra's concertmaster from 1955 to 1959. Silverstein went on to have a distinguished career as a soloist and conductor. The RPO has performed many notable works over the years, including Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Mahler's Symphony No. 2, and Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. The orchestra has also premiered many new works, including John Harbison's Symphony No. 4 and Jennifer Higdon's Concerto for Orchestra. The RPO has received many awards and accolades over the years. In 1957, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance - Orchestra for its recording of Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 4. The orchestra has also been nominated for several other Grammy Awards over the years. In addition to its performances, the RPO is also involved in education and outreach programs. The orchestra's Music Educators' Orchestra provides professional development opportunities for music teachers, while its RPO Kids program introduces young children to classical music. Overall, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has a long and distinguished history as one of the leading orchestras in the United States. With its commitment to excellence and its dedication to education and outreach, the RPO is sure to continue to be a major force in the world of classical music for many years to come.More....
