Michel Sénéchal was a French tenor and actor who was born on February 16, 1927, in Paris, France. He was the son of a baker and grew up in a working-class family. Sénéchal showed an early interest in music and began singing in his church choir at a young age. He later studied at the Paris Conservatory and made his professional debut in 1950 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Sénéchal quickly established himself as one of the leading tenors of his generation, known for his clear, bright voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. He was particularly renowned for his performances in the operas of Mozart, Rossini, and Offenbach, and he also had a successful career as a concert singer. One of Sénéchal's most notable performances was in the role of Don Basilio in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1962. His portrayal of the scheming music teacher was praised for its wit and humor, and it helped to establish him as a leading interpreter of comic roles. Sénéchal also had a long association with the Paris Opera, where he performed in numerous productions over the course of his career. He was particularly well-known for his performances in the operas of Offenbach, including "Orpheus in the Underworld" and "The Tales of Hoffmann." In addition to his work as a singer, Sénéchal was also a talented actor and appeared in several films and television shows. He was particularly well-known for his role as Monsieur Triquet in the 1979 film adaptation of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." Throughout his career, Sénéchal received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1976, he was awarded the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, one of the highest honors in France. He was also awarded the title of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres in 1985. Sénéchal continued to perform well into his later years, and he remained a beloved figure in the world of classical music until his death on April 1, 2019, at the age of 92. His legacy as one of the greatest tenors of his generation continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
