Born on 23rd June 1952 in Glasgow, Scotland, Buchanan grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father was a church organist, and her mother was a singer. Buchanan's musical education began at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where she studied under the tutelage of Margaret Marshall. She later continued her studies at the National Opera Studio in London, where she received further training in opera performance. Buchanan's career took off in the 1980s when she began performing in major opera houses around the world. She made her debut at the Royal Opera House in London in 1981, where she played the role of Pamina in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Buchanan's performance was well-received, and she went on to perform in several other productions at the Royal Opera House, including "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni." Buchanan's international career began in 1983 when she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she played the role of Zerlina in Mozart's "Don Giovanni."
