Willard White is a Jamaican-born classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a bass-baritone singer. He was born on October 10, 1946, in Kingston, Jamaica, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a singer. White's parents encouraged him to pursue music, and he began singing in church choirs at a young age. White's talent was evident from an early age, and he was awarded a scholarship to attend the Jamaica School of Music. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree. While at Juilliard, White was a student of the renowned voice teacher, Jennie Tourel. White's career as a professional singer began in the 1970s, when he made his debut with the New York City Opera. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence. In 1976, he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London, where he performed the role of the King in Verdi's "Aida." This performance was a turning point in White's career, and he soon became a sought-after performer in the world of opera. Over the years, White has performed in many of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. He has also performed in many of the world's leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. One of White's most memorable performances was his portrayal of Porgy in the Glyndebourne Festival Opera's production of "Porgy and Bess" in 1986. This performance was widely acclaimed, and White received rave reviews for his portrayal of the character. He went on to perform the role of Porgy in many other productions of the opera, including a production at the Metropolitan Opera in 1990. White has also been recognized for his work as a concert singer.
