Born in 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, Clarey grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a jazz musician. Clarey's love for music began at an early age, and she started singing in her church choir when she was just six years old. She then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she received a Master of Music degree. Clarey quickly established herself as a rising star in the opera world, and she went on to perform with some of the most prestigious opera companies in the United States and Europe. One of Clarey's most notable performances was her portrayal of the title character in the world premiere of John Adams' opera "Nixon in China" at the Houston Grand Opera in 1987.
