Period:RomanticGenre:OperaRaoul Jobin was a renowned Canadian tenor who made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born on April 8, 1906, in Quebec City, Jobin was the youngest of six children. His father, a carpenter, was a music lover who played the violin, and his mother was a homemaker. Jobin's love for music was evident from a young age, and he began singing in the choir of his local church. Jobin's musical talent was recognized by his teachers, and he was encouraged to pursue a career in music. He studied at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec, where he received training in voice and piano. After completing his studies, Jobin began performing in local concerts and recitals. In 1929, Jobin made his professional debut at the Montreal Opera, where he played the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata. His performance was well-received, and he was soon offered a contract with the company. Jobin's career took off, and he began performing in major opera houses across North America and Europe. One of Jobin's most significant performances was in 1935, when he played the role of Don José in Bizet's Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. The performance was a huge success, and Jobin became a household name in the United States. He continued to perform at the Met for several years, playing leading roles in operas such as Faust, La Bohème, and Tosca. Jobin's talent was not limited to opera. He was also a skilled recitalist and performed in concerts across North America and Europe. In 1940, he performed at the White House for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor. Jobin's performance was so well-received that he was invited back to perform for the president several times. Throughout his career, Jobin received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1947, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honors. He was also awarded the Légion d'honneur by the French government in 1953. Jobin retired from performing in 1958, but he continued to be involved in the world of classical music. He taught voice at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and served as the director of the Quebec Symphony Orchestra. He also served as the president of the Canadian Music Council and was a member of the board of directors of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Raoul Jobin passed away on January 13, 1974, at the age of 67. He left behind a legacy as one of Canada's most celebrated classical musicians. His contributions to the world of opera and classical music continue to be celebrated today, and his recordings are still enjoyed by music lovers around the world.More....
