Artist Info
Period:RomanticGenre:OperaVocalRenee Doria was a renowned classical music artist who was born on December 22, 1921, in New York City. She was the daughter of Italian immigrants and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Doria showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. Doria's talent for music was evident from an early age, and she quickly became a prodigy. She began performing in public at the age of six and made her debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of nine. She continued to perform with the orchestra throughout her childhood and teenage years, and her talent was recognized by many. In 1940, Doria enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where she studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Rosina Lhévinne. She quickly became one of Lhévinne's star pupils and was praised for her technical skill and musicality. Doria's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in the 1940s, and she quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of her generation. She made her debut at Carnegie Hall in 1944, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Doria was praised for her virtuosity and musicality. Over the next few years, Doria continued to perform with orchestras around the world, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. She also performed solo recitals in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Doria's repertoire was vast and included works by many of the great composers, including Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and Brahms. She was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Chopin, and her recordings of his music are still considered some of the best ever made. In addition to her career as a concert pianist, Doria was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Juilliard School of Music for many years and also gave masterclasses around the world. Her students included many talented pianists who went on to have successful careers in their own right. Throughout her career, Doria received many awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1953, she was awarded the prestigious Harriet Cohen International Music Award, and in 1961, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. She was also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Doria continued to perform and teach well into her later years, and she remained a beloved figure in the world of classical music until her death in 1971. Her legacy lives on through her recordings and the many pianists she taught and inspired over the course of her career.More....
