Jonathan Dimmock is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music through his exceptional skills as an organist, conductor, and composer. Born in 1955 in San Francisco, California, Dimmock showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later switched to the organ, which became his primary instrument. Dimmock's musical education began at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with David Craighead, a renowned organist and teacher. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he earned a Master of Music degree in organ performance. During his time at Juilliard, Dimmock studied with some of the most prominent organists of the time, including Marie-Claire Alain, Jean Guillou, and Peter Hurford. After completing his studies, Dimmock began his career as a professional musician, performing as a soloist and accompanist in concerts and recitals across the United States and Europe. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and versatile musician, with a particular talent for improvisation. In 1980, he won first prize in the National Improvisation Competition sponsored by the American Guild of Organists, cementing his status as one of the most talented organists of his generation. Throughout his career, Dimmock has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the San Francisco Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's most celebrated conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Sir Simon Rattle. One of the highlights of Dimmock's career was his appointment as the organist and choirmaster at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, a position he held from 1985 to 2003. During his tenure, he oversaw the cathedral's music program, which included a choir of over 100 singers and a renowned organ with over 7,000 pipes. He also performed regularly as a soloist and accompanist, and his recordings of the cathedral's music have been widely praised for their beauty and artistry. In addition to his work as a performer, Dimmock is also an accomplished composer and arranger. He has written numerous works for organ, choir, and orchestra, and his compositions have been performed by ensembles around the world. He has also arranged music for a variety of instruments and ensembles, including the San Francisco Symphony and the Kronos Quartet. Dimmock's contributions to the world of music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1990, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Virtuosité by the French Ministry of Culture, in recognition of his exceptional talent as an organist. He has also been awarded the Medal of Honor by the American Guild of Organists, and in 2015 he was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London. Today, Dimmock continues to perform and record music, and he remains an active member of the music community. He is also a dedicated teacher, and he has taught at a number of institutions, including the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the University of California, Berkeley.
