Johnson was an American composer and organist who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on January 30, 1922, in New York City, Johnson showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied at the Juilliard School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1943. After completing his studies, Johnson served in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in Europe, where he played the organ for military services and concerts. After the war, Johnson returned to the United States and began his career as a composer and organist. Johnson's compositions were heavily influenced by his love of the organ, and he wrote many pieces specifically for the instrument. His works were known for their intricate harmonies and complex rhythms, and he often incorporated elements of jazz and blues into his music. One of Johnson's most famous works is his "Trumpet Tune in D Major," which has become a popular piece for weddings and other celebratory events. The piece features a bright, upbeat melody played on the trumpet, accompanied by the organ. Another notable work by Johnson is his "Variations on 'Hyfrydol'," which is based on a Welsh hymn tune. The piece features a series of variations on the original melody, each with its own unique character and style. In addition to his compositions, Johnson was also a highly respected organist. He served as the organist and choirmaster at several churches throughout his career, including St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Syracuse, New York, and St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in New York City. Johnson was also a prolific writer and lecturer on music. He wrote several books on the history and theory of music, as well as articles for various music journals. He also taught at several universities, including Syracuse University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Throughout his career, Johnson received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1986, he was awarded the prestigious AGO Distinguished Composer Award by the American Guild of Organists. He was also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. David N. Johnson passed away on January 27, 1987, at the age of 64. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world.More....
