Richard Kraus grew up in a musical environment and started playing the piano at a young age. Kraus received his formal music education at the Vienna Academy of Music, where he studied piano, conducting, and composition. He graduated with honors in 1950 and began his career as a pianist and conductor. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was invited to perform at various concerts and festivals. In 1953, Kraus made his debut as a conductor with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He received critical acclaim for his performance, and his career as a conductor took off.
