Dmitri Hvorostovsky was a world-renowned baritone opera singer, born on October 16, 1962, in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, Russia. He was the youngest of three children born to Alexander Hvorostovsky, a civil engineer, and Lyudmila Hvorostovskaya, a nurse. Dmitri grew up in a musical family, with his mother being a pianist and his father playing the guitar. He began singing in a choir at the age of six and later studied at the Krasnoyarsk School of Arts. In 1985, Hvorostovsky won the Glinka Competition in Moscow, which launched his career as an opera singer. He made his debut at the Krasnoyarsk Opera House in 1986, singing the role of Marullo in Verdi's Rigoletto. He then went on to perform at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and stage presence. Hvorostovsky's international career began in 1989 when he won the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in Wales. This victory led to performances at major opera houses around the world, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Vienna State Opera. He was known for his rich, velvety voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. One of Hvorostovsky's most famous roles was that of Count di Luna in Verdi's Il Trovatore. He performed this role at the Metropolitan Opera in 1993, and it became one of his signature roles. He also performed in other Verdi operas, including Rigoletto, La Traviata, and Don Carlo. In addition to his opera performances, Hvorostovsky was also known for his recitals and concerts. He performed at major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He was particularly known for his performances of Russian songs, including those by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Throughout his career, Hvorostovsky received numerous awards and honors. In 1995, he was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia, the highest honor given to a performing artist in Russia. He was also awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, one of Russia's highest civilian honors. In 2015, he was awarded the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky, another prestigious Russian honor. Hvorostovsky was also recognized internationally for his contributions to the world of opera. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2002 and the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 2003. He was also a recipient of the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording in 1999 for his performance in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. In 2015, Hvorostovsky announced that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Despite undergoing treatment, he continued to perform and record music. He released his final album, Dmitri Hvorostovsky Sings of Love, in 2017. He passed away on November 22, 2017, at the age of 55. Dmitri Hvorostovsky was a beloved figure in the world of classical music, known for his powerful voice and his ability to connect with audiences through his performances. He will be remembered as one of the greatest baritone opera singers of his generation.
