The Mariinsky (Kirov) Theater Orchestra is one of the most renowned classical music ensembles in the world. Founded in 1783, the orchestra has a rich history of excellence in performance and has been a cornerstone of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia for over two centuries. The Mariinsky Theater Orchestra was originally founded as the Imperial Russian Opera Orchestra, and was tasked with providing music for the performances of the Imperial Russian Opera Company. The orchestra quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and was soon performing not only for the opera, but also for ballet and symphonic concerts. Over the years, the orchestra has undergone several name changes, reflecting the changing political and cultural landscape of Russia. In 1935, the orchestra was renamed the Kirov Theater Orchestra, in honor of Sergei Kirov, a prominent Bolshevik leader who was assassinated in 1934. The orchestra retained this name until 1992, when it was once again renamed the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra, in honor of the theater's founder, Empress Catherine the Great. Throughout its history, the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra has been led by some of the most renowned conductors in the world. In the early years, the orchestra was led by such luminaries as Eduard Nápravník and Felix Blumenfeld. In the mid-20th century, the orchestra was led by such greats as Yevgeny Mravinsky and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. In more recent years, the orchestra has been led by Valery Gergiev, who has been the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater since 1988. Under Gergiev's leadership, the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra has continued to thrive, and has become one of the most sought-after ensembles in the world. The orchestra has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. The Mariinsky Theater Orchestra has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2003, the orchestra was awarded the Order of Friendship by the Russian government, in recognition of its contributions to Russian culture. In 2010, the orchestra was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance, for its recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10. One of the highlights of the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra's history was its performance at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The orchestra performed at the opening ceremony of the games, playing a medley of Russian classical music that included works by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Stravinsky. The performance was widely praised for its beauty and artistry, and helped to showcase the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra to a global audience. Another notable performance by the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra was its 2016 tour of the United States, which included performances in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The tour was a major success, with the orchestra receiving rave reviews for its performances of works by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich. In addition to its performances, the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra has also been involved in numerous recordings over the years. The orchestra has recorded extensively for the Mariinsky label, and has released recordings of works by such composers as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich. Overall, the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra is a true gem of the classical music world.
