Gregor-Smith received his early education at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he studied under the tutelage of William Pleeth. He later continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was awarded the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal for his outstanding performance. He also studied with the renowned cellist Pierre Fournier in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1970, Gregor-Smith joined the internationally acclaimed Lindsay String Quartet as their cellist. The quartet was founded in 1965 and quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional performances. Gregor-Smith's addition to the group only added to their success, and they went on to perform in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Lindsay String Quartet was known for their interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Haydn, and Mozart, and they recorded many of their performances for various record labels.
