The ensemble is named after the Lindsay family, who were the original patrons of the group. The Lindsays have gained a reputation for their exceptional performances of string quartets, and they have become one of the most respected ensembles in the world. The founding members of The Lindsays were Peter Cropper (violin), Ronald Birks (violin), Robin Ireland (viola), and Bernard Gregor-Smith (cello). The group was formed while the members were studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London. They quickly gained recognition for their outstanding performances, and they were soon invited to perform at major music festivals throughout Europe. The Lindsays have had a number of personnel changes over the years, but the core of the group has remained the same. Peter Cropper remained with the group until his death in 2015, and Robin Ireland left the group in 2005. The current members of The Lindsays are Ronald Birks (violin), Catherine Manson (violin), Robin Michael (viola), and Bernard Gregor-Smith (cello). The Lindsays have performed at some of the most prestigious music venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. They have also performed at major music festivals such as the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. One of the highlights of The Lindsays' career was their performance of the complete Beethoven string quartets at the Wigmore Hall in London in 1993. The group performed all 16 of Beethoven's string quartets over the course of eight concerts, and the performances were widely praised for their technical excellence and emotional depth. The Lindsays have also been recognized for their recordings. They have recorded the complete string quartets of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as works by other composers such as Schubert, Brahms, and Bartok. Their recordings have won numerous awards, including the Gramophone Award for Best Chamber Music Recording in 1991 for their recording of the complete Beethoven string quartets. In addition to their performances and recordings, The Lindsays have also been committed to music education. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and they have been involved in outreach programs to bring classical music to underserved communities. The Lindsays have received numerous awards and honors throughout their career. In 1990, they were awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Chamber Music Award, and in 2005 they were awarded the Wigmore Hall Medal in recognition of their contributions to chamber music. They have also been appointed Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for their services to music. Despite their many accomplishments, The Lindsays have remained committed to their mission of bringing the beauty and power of classical music to audiences around the world. They continue to perform and record, and they remain one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in the world.More....
