Born on 11th May 1945 in London, Pople showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later at the Juilliard School in New York, where he was a student of Leonard Rose. Pople began his career as a cellist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and the English Chamber Orchestra. He also played as a soloist, performing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the London Mozart Players, among others. In the 1970s, Pople began to focus more on conducting, and he quickly established himself as a talented and versatile conductor. He became the principal conductor of the London Festival Orchestra in 1978 and held the position for over a decade. During this time, he conducted numerous concerts and recordings with the orchestra, including performances of works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. Pople's reputation as a conductor continued to grow, and he was soon in demand as a guest conductor with orchestras around the world. He conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Pople's work with the London Mozart Players earned him critical acclaim and numerous awards. In 1991, he was awarded the Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording for his recording of Mozart's "Symphonies Nos. 38-41" with the London Mozart Players. He also received the Classical Brit Award for Best Orchestral Album in 2000 for his recording of Mozart's "Piano Concertos Nos. 20 and 21" with pianist Howard Shelley and the London Mozart Players. In addition to his work as a conductor, Pople has also been a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. He has taught at the Royal Academy of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Royal Northern College of Music. He has also conducted masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing his knowledge and experience with aspiring musicians.
